Pianist Gen Tomuro has graced stages in major concert halls as soloist and as a chamber musician in his native Japan, North, Central and South America and in various cities throughout Europe.
Born in Tokyo, Gen Tomuro spent his early life in San Francisco and in Boston where he attended the Walnut Hill School for the Arts while being the youngest student of world-renowned professor Wha-Kyung Byun at the New England Conservatory of Music.
In 2006, Gen Tomuro met Philippe Entremont with whom Gen went onto study as Entremont’s only apprentice in Paris. This privileged relationship with the legendary musician has brought Gen Tomuro to perform worldwide, often with his Maestro. In his memoir, Philippe Entremont writes, “[...] Gen Tomuro is my very promising student, born in Japan but with an international upbringing. He is intelligent, brilliant even, so much so that he learnt to speak Italian in six days ! His advancement is extremely steady and he is sure to succeed [...]”
At the age of 18, Gen Tomuro gave his debut concerts at the Salle Gaveau with the Orchestre de l’Alliance where he was praised for his mature and fluid interpretation of the Schumann Piano Concerto. Since then, he has played with members of the Orchestre National de Belgique, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Festival Orchestra of Santo Domingo, the Palm Beach Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Cité Universitaire de Paris with members of the Orchestre de Paris and most recently with the Orchestra of Teatro Giglio.
The international career of Gen Tomuro was brought back to Japan in 2012 when he was selected as resident artist of the Chanel Pygmalion Days programme where he gave seven recitals throughout the year. This opportunity gave Gen engagements in prominent halls in Japan, notably, the Suntory Hall, Kioi Hall, Yamaha Ginza Hall, Munetsugu Hall, Ohga Hall, Phoenix Hall, to name a few.
Gen has joined renowned violinist Gérard Poulet and cellist Hirofumi Kanno in forming a trio which have been critically acclaimed for their performances, and were recently invited to perform for the First Lady Akié Abé and for the Empress Michiko of Japan.
Gen Tomuro’s strong affinity to France has opened doors for many opportunities in the Franco-Japanese communities, with numerous concerts representing both countries. In recent years, he gave a recital at the 90th anniversary of the Maison Franco-japonaise as well as a highly successful lecture-concert in French and in Japanese on the composer Erik Satie for his 150th anniversary.
In 2016, Gen Tomuro performed extensively in Paris, Tokyo and in Venice, and in 2017, he had a concert with members of the Orchestre de Paris followed by a recital in Udine, Italy, both with remarkable reviews.
Forthcoming projects include a CD recording with Philippe Entremont of pieces for four hands by Schubert, recitals in Tokyo, Kamakura, Paris, Venice and in London.
Gen Tomuro is currently enroled at the Royal Academy of Music in London in his final year as a Master of Arts student.
