Yu Kumakura was born in Tokyo in 1992. He began composing at the age of 16 and conducting from the time he entered university.
Graduated from Toho Gakuen University and completed the Graduate School. Conducted under Toshiaki Umeda and Tatsuya Shimono, and attended lessons by Tatsunori Numajiri, Ken Takaseki, Yannick Paget, András Deák and Harry Lyth at workshops.
Won the 1st prize at the 26th Kyoto French Music Academy. Won second prize at the 12th Danube International Conductor Competition.
Since September 2016, he has been an assistant of NHK Symphony Orchestra / Principal Conductor Paavo Jarvi, and since November of that year, he has also been an assistant in all regular performances of the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
