CHVRCHES
Two years after their formation, Chvrches released Recover EP in March 2013, which included hits "The Mother We Share" and "Recover". Their debut studio album, The Bones of What You Believe, was released on 20 September 2013, while the band was ranked fifth on the Sound of 2013 list by the BBC. Two years later, on 25 September 2015, the group released their second album, Every Open Eye. Their third album, Love Is Dead, was released on 25 May 2018.
Before Chvrches, Iain Cook was a member of Aereogramme and The Unwinding Hours. He also wrote music for film and TV. Martin Doherty was a live member of The Twilight Sad. According to Mayberry, "Iain and Martin went to university together so they've known each other for quite a long time."
Mayberry completed a four-year law degree followed by a Masters in Journalism. This led her into a career in freelance journalism for several years prior to music. She has played piano since childhood and drums since she was a teenager. From age 15 until 22, she played drums in various bands. Before Chvrches, Mayberry was a member of two local bands, Boyfriend/Girlfriend and Blue Sky Archives. In the latter band she was the vocalist, drummer, and keyboardist.
Cook was producing an EP for Blue Sky Archives on a weekend in September 2011. Cook started a new project with Doherty and asked Mayberry to sing on a couple of demos. They wrote together for seven or eight months in a basement studio in Glasgow. Cook, Mayberry and Doherty decided to form a new band after the sessions proved to be successful. They chose the name Chvrches, using a Roman "v" to avoid confusions with actual churches on internet searches. Chvrches have also stated that the band name "has no religious connotation, [they] just thought it sounded cool". The name is normally stylised in all capital letters.
Chvrches began work on their third album in February 2017 in Los Angeles. On 24 February, Dave Stewart of Eurythmics posted on Twitter that he was in the studio working with the band. On 12 December, it was announced that Greg Kurstin had produced the album, and that work on the project was nearing completion. On 1 January 2018, Doherty confirmed that the album would be released in some time the following year. In January, Mayberry stated in an interview that the album would be titled Love Is Dead, and announced "Get Out" as the first single from the album.[36] The song was released on 31 January 2018. Speaking about the album in an interview, Mayberry said "It's a typically Glaswegian thing to do, to feel the most misanthropic and macabre when you're in the sunniest place on earth."
To promote the upcoming album, the band wiped all of their social media pages, before posting a short video containing new music captioned "GET IN". The post was accompanied by a link to a Facebook Messenger page with the band. On 31 January 2018, BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac announced "Get Out" to be her Hottest Record in the World, giving the single its world premiere. The album will also include a song titled "My Enemy" featuring Matt Berninger of The National, released 28 February. The track list was unveiled on 26 February 2018. On 29 March, the band released "Never Say Die" as the third single from the album. On 10 April, the band released "Miracle" as their fourth single from the album.
Known for their clean sound, Chvrches' music style is usually tagged as electronic or synthpop. Neon Gold described their sound as "a godless hurricane of kinetic pop energy". Kitty Empire of The Observer wrote they "make accessible electro-pop that's only just short of truly brilliant". Wired noted following Every Open Eye's release that the album "cements the group as today's heir apparent to Depeche Mode, New Order, and other titans of British electronic music."
They are influenced by acts such as Madonna, Eurythmics, Throbbing Gristle, Prince, Tubeway Army, Robyn, Laurie Anderson, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins, Death Cab for Cutie, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston and Elliott Smith. The band writes, records, mixes, and masters their songs in a basement studio in Glasgow.
Wednesday Campanella ( Suiyōbi no Campanera) is a Japanese music group formed in 2012 combining musical elements of the EDM, J-Pop, and Hip Hop genres. The trio consists of KOM_I, Kenmochi Hidefumi, and Dir.F.
The name Suiyōbi no Campanella is in reference to their usual rehearsal meeting day of Suiyōbi (Wednesday). Its mixing of Kanji, Katakana and Hiragana was primarily to appeal to the group's collective ego. For their international debut at the SXSW festival in Austin, they adopted the English moniker online, "Wednesday Campanella", which they continued to use in San Francisco for their 2016 J-Pop Summit show and in 2017, at Le Magnifique Society Festival show in Reims, France. KOM_I's name is taken a shortening of her first and last name.
The group uploaded its first songs, "Oz" and "Kūkai", on YouTube in July 2012. Their first CD Suiyōbi no Campanella Demo 1 was sold at Design Festa Tokyo Autumn in November of the same year.
On 11 March 2013, KOM_I held her first live performances alone representing the group. It took place at Shimokitazawa ERA, a nightclub in Tokyo.
Their first mini album entitled Crawl to Sakaagari (クロールと逆上がり) was released in May 2013. It was exclusively sold at Village Vanguard Shimokitazawa.
In September 2013, the group won a right to join in the Ringo Ongakusai Festival, to which many Japanese music groups went. KOM_I performed in several shows with “Ringo-ame Man," an apple-candy-headed character. The following month, their second mini album Rashomon (羅生門) was released and sold exclusively at Tower Records.
In March 2014, the group's third mini album, Cinema Jack (“シネマジャック”), was released. The group conducted serial web interviews with online music store OTOTOY to promote the release of the album.
On 5 August 2014, the group launched an outstanding single, "Momotarō", on J-WAVE, for their fourth mini album, Watashi wo Onigashima ni Tsuretette (私を鬼が島に連れてって, "Take me to Onigashima Island"), which was released on 5 November 2014 in die-cut CD edition.
In 2015, Wednesday Campanella released their first EP, Triathlon. Unlike its previous works, all three songs on the EP were produced by a different producers: Kenmochi, OORUTAICHI and OBKR from N.O.R.K. Later that year, the full album Zipangu was released continuing with a gradual shift to a J-pop sound with elements of Electronic dance music.
In March 2016, KOM_I announced that their next album would be released around June at their first American show at SXSW. The mini-album entitled UMA, conceptually based upon unknown mythical animals, was released on 22 June 2016 under Warner Music Japan, their major label debut.
The single, SUPERKID, was released as a teaser for their first proper album with Warner, SUPERMAN in 2017. KOM_I performed at the Nippon Budokan in March 2017, her largest show and highest budget production with a Blu-Ray released in July 2017. KOM_I also collaborated with the Japanese Derby for the digital single "Melos" and a live streaming concert on their Youtube channel entitled "Time to Play". They later wrote a theme song, entitled "Ei sei", for a real-life adventure game, based upon the Kingdom manga, taking place across multiple prefectures simultaneously. The song received a widespread digital release in June 2017. KOM_I and Kenmochi do regular Wednesday night broadcasting for J-Wave's Spark Radio program with frequent guests and discussion.
In 2018 they featured on CHVRCHES single Out Of My Head.
