Austrian flutist Walter Auer is Principal Flutist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera. He teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and as Guest-Professor at the Shobi-University Tokyo. With his wife Julia, a musicologist and traverso flutist, he has three small kids; Marianna (6), Leopold (4) and Anton (1). They love living in Vienna. Together they head Auers’ Flutery – Lectures and Concerts“ in collaboration with Road Scholar/USA.
Walter Auer was born in Villach, Carinthia, in 1971. He began studying flute under Prof. Johannes von Kalckreuth at the Carinthian State Conservatorium. Further studies led him to Michael Kofler at the Mozarteum University of Music in Salzburg, to the Herbert von Karajan- Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic and to Aurèle Nicolet for his master classes in Basel.
He began his professional career as principal flute with the Dresden Philharmonic and the NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Hanover before he was appointed to become principal flutist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera in 2003.
Both as a soloist and chamber musician, he was awarded prizes in the national and international competitions of Leoben, Cremona, Bonn and Munich (ARD). Since then, he has worked internationally as a much sought-after soloist and chamber music partner.
His efforts to extend the flute repertoire have met with resounding success, for example in the transcription for flute of Chopin’s piano trio (released by Camerata Tokyo, 2010), and are documented in the very first recording of works by Italian flautist and composer Giulio Briccialdi (Brilliant Flute – published by NAMI, Japan, 2011). He has also collaborated closely with the composer Luna Alcalay, the Grande Dame of Austrian composers (1928-2012). In the last years of her life he performed premieres of works specifically dedicated to himself in Cardiff / Wales (en passant) and at the Musikverein Vienna (Escapade). His latest recordings were published by the labels Tudor and paladino in Europe as well as by Camerata and Meister Music in Japan.
As a soloist Walter has most recently performed concerts with the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, the Dohnányi Orchestra Budapest, the Prime Philharmonic Seoul, the Camerata Schulz, the Nuremberg Philharmonic, the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Capella Istropolitana, the Orchestra Academy in Ossiach, the KSO and the Wiener Virtuosen. As a soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic, Walter was heard performing under the direction of Daniel Barenboim (Boulez) and sharing the stage with Cecilia Bartoli (Salieri).
Furthermore, he is very much in demand as a music teacher on the international scene. In recent years he has held workshops and masterclasses at the New York Summer Music Festival, at the Juilliard School and at the Mannes College for Music (USA), at the Sydney Conservatory and at the University of Newcastle (Australia), in Japan (Sapporo, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto), Taiwan, Korea, Slovenia, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. In his capacity as lecturer he has supported the International Orchestra Institute in Attergau, Austria, since summer 2010. In 2011 he was performer und lecturer at the International Flute Festivals in Cardiff, Wales and Shiga, Japan. In 2012 Walter held master classes at the Carinthian Music Academy in Ossiach, Austria, and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, 2013 at the Pacif Music Festival (PMF) in Sapporo.
Also in 2012 he started teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and since 2013 he is Guest-Professor at the Shobi University Tokyo.
Walter Auer plays a Sankyo 24K flute with a head joint designed by Werner Tomasi from Vienna. When performing concerts with his wife Julia, Walter also plays Renaissance and Baroque traversos made by Giovanni Tardino and Martin Wenner.
