Set up by a group of forward-looking, internationally minded artists in 1914, the Nika Association originally rebelled against the Bunten exhibition, a government-run gatekeeper of art that emphasised traditionalism and the maintenance of classic Japanese forms of expression. Introducing ground-breaking Western influences onto the domestic scene, Nika later became a bastion of the avant-garde and has kept going strong for over a century now. The 2017 edition of its annual open exhibition consists of four categories: painting, sculpture, design and photography.

The Nika Association stands out, even among the many art groups whose activities occasioned this museums founding. The list of legendary Yoga (Western-style) painters who exhibited in the Nika Association Exhibition includes such names as KISHIDA Ryusei, SAEKI Yuzo, KOIDE Narashige, SEKINE Shoji, KOGA Harue, FOUJITA Tsuguharu, MATSUMOTO Shunsuke, OKAMOTO Taro, and TOGO Seiji—not to mention Henri Matisse and other European masters. An exhibition of the history of 20th-century Japanese art through 100 years of art from the Nika Association.
