Reigakusha Gagaku Ensemble - Gagaku performance group that was established in 1985 with the aim of studying the ensemble of Gagaku. Music Director - Shiba Yusuke.
Since its establishment, in addition to the current Gagaku classical music, they actively work on the restoration of abolition music, the restoration performance of Shosoin instruments, and the performance of contemporary works, and are developing a wide range of activities both in Japan and abroad. In particular, they are emphasizing the commission to contemporary composers and the premiere of the new work of classical Gagaku style, and we have voluntary concerts held twice a year.

In addition, many educational programs such as cultural agency 'cultivation of children by cultural arts', workshops for elementary and junior high school students, lecture concerts and so on are carried out.

History

In 1985 SHIBA Sukeyasu, who served as a musician at the Department of Music of the Imperial Household Agency and is a specialist in the Japanese classic flute, took over as music director and gathered graduates from colleges of music and active musicians to organize a group called Reigakusha. It has earned a good reputation for its gracious performances, including its traditional gagaku repertoire, revival of pieces that were no longer being performed, reproduction of gagaku instruments that had been preserved in Shosoin Storehouse and its performance of the works of contemporary traditional music by TAKEMITSU Toru and other composers. Many of the members also are active soloists: MIYATA Mayumi on the sho, NAKAMURA Hitomi on the hichiriki, and ISHIKAWA Ko on the sho, as well as NAKAMURA Kahoru who both plays the biwa (four-stringed Japanese lute) and dances.
