Gifu is a province located in the Tokai sub-region , Chūbu region , the central location of Japan . The administrative center is Gifu City. As one of several provinces located entirely in the mainland, Gifu Prefecture has boundaries with 7 provinces: Aichi , Fukui , Ishikawa , Mie , Nagano , Shiga and Toyama .
The Hida region in the North is dominated by high mountains, including the Japanese Alps . The Mido region in the south is largely accreted by the fertility of the Nōbi plain , a large plain with arable land. Most Gifu residents live in the southern province, near Nagoya city .
Gifu Prefecture consists of two former provinces, Hida and Mino . The name of the province is taken from its city name, which was named by Oda Nobunaga during his all-Japan unification campaign in 1567. Historically, it has been a manufacturing center for swords All of Japan, with Seki, is the most famous place for manufacturing Japanese Sword.
