Alcoholic beverages are compounds that include water , alcohol ethanol and other digestible compounds.
Fermented alcoholic beverages have been known since prehistoric times. The Egyptians and Sumerians were the first to produce beer and then wine using wild yeast. They are also the first to use alcohol in medicine . Recent archaeological results reinforce the hypothesis that Chinese people produced wine from 5000 BC.
Wine has been drunk since classical Greek times in the breakfast and night wine party. In the 1st century BC wine was also used by Roman people in meals. However the Greeks and even the Romans diluted wine with water.
Between the 8th and 9th centuries , Muslim alchemists distilled spirits from wine. Alcohol is commonly used in daily life as well as in medicine at that time. Spirits began to enter Europe around the middle of the 12th century through alchemists and from the middle of the 14th century the amount of alcohol began to soar.
