The Kobe Philharmonic Association was founded in 1979 in response to the voices of the Kobe citizens to have their very own symphony orchestra. The members of the association consisted of many cultural figures and business executives in Kobe. The Kobe Philharmonic Association establishes the Kobe Philharmonic (K.P.) in 1980 (later on, the secretariat office has moved into the Kobe Cultural Foundation), and from that year on, Chitaru Asahina has assumed leadership of K.P. as its Music Director and Principal Conductor.
In 1980, K.P. held a spectacular debut concert. Since then, K.P. has been performing regular concerts twice a year and annual New Year concerts for the last 32 years. C. Asahina has carried on his role for all these years. Numerous concerts have been performed both in and out of Kobe on the request from various societies, provided at accessible prices to offer the joy of divine classical music to everyone.
In addition to full-sized orchestra performances, K.P. has actively performed many small sized concerts with flexibility. Such efforts have been recognized as a contribution to promote "the City of Music, Kobe".
In 1997, K.P. was awarded "The Kobe City Award for Distinguished Services in Cultural Activities" by these continuing devotions and achievements.
K.P.'s wish has been and will always be to be loved as Kobe citizens' own orchestra and to offer lovely music to everyone.
