Marcellus Pittman is part of Three Chairs, a kind of Detroit supergroup whose members include Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish and Moodymann. Pittman might not have the profile of Moodymann and Parrish, but his talent as a producer and DJ is unarguable. He's been a stalwart of Detroit's music scene since the '90s, starting out with local hip-hop groups but eventually becoming involved with all kinds of party-starting music. He got his break playing alongside Mike Huckaby at Three Floors Of Fun, a Detroit party where a mixed crowd danced to rock, techno and hip-hop. A chance meeting with Theo Parrish, where they bonded over a shared love of eclectic music, was a turning point. Parrish and Pittman later collaborated on a well-received EP, Essential Selections Vol. 1. A run of Pittman solo productions then crept out, as did further collaborations with Parrish and Omar-S. All the while, Pittman's reputation as one of Detroit's best DJs continued to grow. In 2003, over some beers and a game of Tekken, he was asked to join Three Chairs. In a Guardian interview he was asked why he said yes. "If Michael Jackson, Prince and Herbie Hancock ask you to be part of their band, are you going to say no?"
Speaking at the recent Dekmantel Conference, Stephen Titmus delved deep into Pittman's career. Despite an eight-hour flight and no sleep, Pittman was soon cracking jokes and showing the easygoing attitude that's made him such a respected and likeable figure.
