Set up by a group of forward-looking, internationally minded artists in 1914, the Nika Association originally rebelled against the Bunten exhibition, a government-run gatekeeper of art that emphasised traditionalism and the maintenance of classic Japanese forms of expression. Introducing ground-breaking Western influences onto the domestic scene, Nika later became a bastion of the avant-garde and has kept going strong for over a century now. The 2017 edition of its annual open exhibition consists of four categories: painting, sculpture, design and photography.

The Nika Association stands out, even among the many art groups whose activities occasioned this museum’s founding. The list of legendary Yoga (Western-style) painters who exhibited in the Nika Association Exhibition includes such names as KISHIDA Ryusei, SAEKI Yuzo, KOIDE Narashige, SEKINE Shoji, KOGA Harue, FOUJITA Tsuguharu, MATSUMOTO Shunsuke, OKAMOTO Taro, and TOGO Seiji—not to mention Henri Matisse and other European masters. Isamu Noguchi and Mitsuro Hasegawa

Isamu Noguchi (野口 勇 Noguchi Isamu, November 17, 1904 – December 30, 1988) was a Japanese American artist and landscape architect whose artistic career spanned six decades, from the 1920s onward. Known for his sculpture and public works, Noguchi also designed stage sets for various Martha Graham productions, and several mass-produced lamps and furniture pieces, some of which are still manufactured and sold.

In 1947, Noguchi began a collaboration with the Herman Miller company, when he joined with George Nelson, Paul László and Charles Eames to produce a catalog containing what is often considered to be the most influential body of modern furniture ever produced, including the iconic Noguchi table which remains in production today. His work lives on around the world and at the Noguchi Museum in New York City.
