Kyoko Tabe (Tottoko, March 26, 1967 -) is a Japanese pianist.
One of Japan´s most respected international pianists, Kyoko Tabe´s thrilling performances in concert and on disc have brought her immense popularity with audiences and critics, making her one of Japan´s most sought after pianists today.
Ms. Tabe was catapulted to the forefront of public attention when she became the youngest artist to receive first prize in the Japan Music Competition (1984). After winning the Japan Agency of Cultural Affairs´ scholarship in 1988, while still a university student at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, she attended the Hochschüle der Künste Berlin from which she graduated at the top of her class. Her successes in international piano competitions include 1st prize at the Epinal International Piano Competition in France, Schnabel Piano Competition in Berlin, 3rd prize at International Music Competition ARD in Munich; as well as major prizes at the Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw.
Giving numerous concerts with all the major Japanese orchestras, Kyoko Tabe has performed with leading overseas orchestras such as the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic, Bamberger Symphoniker, San Jose Symphony, Bruckner Orchestra Linz, Manchester Camerata, Wurttemberg Chamber, Franz Liszt Chamber, Polish Radio Symphony and the Barcelona City orchestras under esteemed conductors such as Eliahu Inbal, Sir Neville Marriner, Leonid Grin, Paavo Järvi, Jean Fournet, Martin Sieghart and Mikko Franck. Her performance of Mozart´s Piano Concerto No.9, "Jeunehomme" with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra and Jesus Lopez-Cobos received such rave reviews it was subsequently recorded and released on disc. A devoted chamber musician, she is often invited to play with ensembles including the Wiener Bläserensemble, Carmina Quartet and the Alban Berg Quartet.
Kyoko Tabe´s busy recital schedule takes her all over Japan and overseas. Recent highlights include her highly successful New York debut recital presented by Carnegie Hall and her Schubert Zyklus recital series, which began in 2003 at Hamarikyu Asahi Hall and received such remarkable acclaim that she earned a reputation as Japan´s leading Schubert exponent.
Also known for championing the work of contemporary composers, her performances and recording of Takashi Yoshimatsu´s Pleiades Dances and his Memo Flora piano concerto, especially composed for her, won over listeners from various fields. In 2001, she premiered the new piano concerto by Keiko Fujie, to great applause.
More than twenty of Kyoko Tabe´s recordings, including her Schubert Sonata series, Mendelssohn´s Songs without Words and CD of piano works by Sibelius, Debussy and Grieg have been released by DENON and CHANDOS. All recordings have won Ms. Tabe praise from leading magazines, including Stereo Review (United States), BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone (UK) and Germany´s Phono Forum.
In addition to all her achievements, Kyoko is also the winner for the Muramatsu Award (the grand award of music division) and the Nippon Steel Music Award. She currently divided her activities between Japan and Europe.
